![]() Later in the game, they'll actually jump on your forcing you to carry them along with other annoying antics. But what really hurts the game is the AI doing obvious input reading to where they follow your character while keeping their distance walking backwards. The only way I survived this was exploiting the ability to switch to another character that has full health when you find one of the two hidden characters at the game's beginning. The tutorial area is fine, it's when the game actually starts and you get treated to an onslaught of enemies, an escape sequence, then you meet two characters that you have to follow to your first real boss fight, all without a single healing item! At least the tutorial gave you a couple sodas. Especially in the very beginning of the game which I swear is one of the worst beginnings in video game history. It's not so bad in chapter 1 but if you're not careful, enemies can gang up on you at any time. Having enemies scale or characters sharing levels and money would've easily fixed this. Glen starts at level 1 and no money while everything else is scaled to the progress you made with Provie. For example, say you start with Provie and then you get bored with her and want to switch to Glen. If you stick with one character for most of the game the others are going to be woefully underpowered if you want to change. They're playable, but the issue is that all the work you have to put into Bruno's high flying combos or Rudy's grappler chains, one of Ryan or Provie's specials completely out damages it with minimal effort.Īnother issue is characters don't level up together. The way stats are balanced and how bad throw damage is scaled, the two characters that are a bit more grab oriented suffer, hard. You have some characters that are pretty decent all around, some that are a bit more technical while being rewarding, a couple can be considered easy mode, and then you have poor Bruno and even poorer Rudy. The real issue is the balance, AI and difficulty. All the characters have different fighting styles that are well represented and everyone plays completely different from each other. It definitely feels like a River City Ransom game with the open world, trial and error with food and buying special attacks. Graphics are great in that stylized retro way and most important of all for a beat em' up game, hitting people feels good and never gets boring. The soundtrack is great even after a certain thing that happened with the previous composer. River City Ransom: Underground is a mixed bag.
